Why you ask? The horrible violence against Brendan Teena and his gruesome death? No, because the Chloe Sevigny character had an orgasm that lasted too long. Yes. That's right. That's what gets an NC-17.

Me? I'm totally gonna read this. I love love love well written sex scenes. Hell, I love all sex scenes, but I have a fine appreciation for a well written one. I first cracked open a romance novel back in high school when my BFF started reading her mother's books. I'd say they overwhelmingly concentrate on the romance and emotional relationship between the hero and heroine. All the good stuff leading up to hitting the sheets. Romances are books for women and we do tend to like a little intimacy and romance with our s-e-x.Jeannie Linhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12714068387571203896noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1240858921074775709.post-24617440663717822642010-03-15T14:52:02.507-07:002010-03-15T14:52:02.507-07:00Carly and Kate--thanks for stopping by, and I'...Carly and Kate--thanks for stopping by, and I'll be sure to check out your writing! I'm just getting into romance fiction and yeah, I much prefer the ones where the male and female characters actually share more than an affinity for doin' it. That's what I really liked about Lessons in French: the protagonists had a history and a rapport as well as sexual chemistry.

Sadako: I have seen Coming Soon, years ago! I'm with you--I really liked the concept and wish the film itself would have been better. Can you believe that was young Ryan Reynolds as the main girl's love interest? (Don't even get me started on TV and movies.) Which is why An Experienced Mistress was so refreshing, and partly why I've started seeking out more romances (suggestions are welcome in the comments! "

Agreed--you hardly see that in most movies. Or if you do it's not super realistic--this isn't a romance book or even movie, but the movie Coming Soon is about girls not trying to get laid but rather trying to experience orgasm. You so rarely see people really focusing on that. It's not a great movie but nice in that it's a little different in its treatment of female sexuality.

Anyway, great review. This book sounds wonderful and just like the kind of romance I like, which is not too gooey, but convinces you the two protagonists actually know and like each other. So I am looking forward to it!
